Building Blocks: A Unique Residential House Design by Sheng-Yuan Chen

Maximizing Daylighting and Storage

One of the standout features of Building Blocks is the large internal French windows that allow natural light to flood every corner of the room. This not only creates a bright and airy atmosphere but also enhances the connection between the interior and the surrounding environment. The gentle texture of the wood grain used throughout the space adds a touch of warmth and harmony.

Another ingenious design element is the inclined tangent line on the plane of the mezzanine. This design choice not only avoids the visual obstruction of the beam but also creates a wider view of the two floors. The beam is seamlessly integrated into the overall design through the use of wood veneer covering, embedded light bars, and a unique ceiling shape, harmonizing its presence with the rest of the space.

To emphasize the correlation between material and space function, the staircase in Building Blocks is built with concrete polishing, creating a visually striking element. The transition between the first and second floors is marked by laminate flooring, which adds a clear distinction to the overall atmosphere. The irregular structure of the space is cleverly concealed through the use of different flooring materials, creating a seamless and cohesive design.

Building Blocks also incorporates hidden storage solutions throughout the space. A hidden room, decorated with a grid-line door, is located below the staircase, providing a discreet storage area. Additionally, invisible storage has been cleverly situated at the end of the stairs, maximizing the use of space and ensuring a clutter-free environment.

The design of Building Blocks prioritizes the connection between public areas and the emotional communication of residents. The open kitchen in the dining room serves as an intimate area where family members can engage in sight communication and increase emotional interactivity. The ceiling above the island is designed to accommodate the height of the entrance to the study room upstairs, ensuring optimal comfort and functionality.

Building Blocks was completed in Taiwan between January and May 2019. The design team, led by Sheng-Yuan Chen, also included Huang Tzu Ting and Liu Chia Fa. The project received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award-winning design showcases the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

Building Blocks is a testament to Sheng-Yuan Chen's creativity and ability to overcome challenges. By utilizing various floor heights and strategically addressing the constraints imposed by beams and columns, the design team achieved optimal lighting and comfortable movement throughout the space.
